Nanaimo, a great destination!

For years, we always thought of Nanaimo as the ferry terminal to get us elsewhere. After living here for 4 years, we find that there is much to do related to nature, culture, history and the arts! It's a great place to spend a weekend or a week! Over 80 parks and 125 Km of trails to explore in the city alone! Take a foot ferry to Newcastle Island, a hidden gem in the Nanaimo harbour, scene the little known 1930's Canadian Pacific Railway Resort. The historic downtown and the waterfront promenade are a treat to explore. There's a University and big-city shopping is available. No rush hour traffic and no commutes! Most people who visit say they had no idea what a cute town it is! Many come back to live they like it so much!

Okay Donna, but you forgot to mention Nanaimo's greatest claim to fame--Diana Krall. A town that could produce Diana Krall can be forgiven a lot of pulp mill pollution and mega-malls. She has almost singlehandedly erased Nanaimo's reputation as BC's capital of bad taste, as in the expression, "the full Nanaimo." Now any stuck-up Lower Mainlander who sneers, "Nanaimo--isn't that the home of the bathtub race?" can be countered with "Yeah, and of Diana Krall. Eat your heart out, Schmuck!"
